Jamboree Scout Leaders
Help make AJ2028 an unforgettable experience for young people.
The NSW Contingent is seeking experienced and committed leaders to take on the role of Jamboree Scout Leader (JSL) at the 27th Australian Jamboree (AJ2028).
As a JSL, you’ll lead a Jamboree Unit of approximately 36 youth members and 5 adult leaders, creating a safe, supportive and rewarding Jamboree experience while helping young people develop confidence, independence and leadership skills.
What does a JSL do?
JSLs are responsible for the leadership, welfare and day-to-day operation of their Jamboree Unit. Working alongside Assistant Jamboree Scout Leaders (AJSLs), you will help ensure every member feels safe, included and ready to embrace the Jamboree adventure.
Key responsibilities
Youth and adult welfare
- Lead the health, safety, behaviour and wellbeing of youth and adult members.
- Foster a positive, inclusive and supportive environment.
- Provide leadership, guidance and support throughout the event.
Pre-Jamboree planning and preparation
- Work with your line leadership team to prepare for AJ2028.
- Coordinate patrol formations and establish the Jamboree Unit Council.
- Support the election or appointment of Jamboree Patrol Leaders (JPLs).
- Assist members and families with preparation, travel, packing and bump-in requirements.
Communication and coordination
- Act as the primary communication link between the NSW Contingent, unit members and families.
- Ensure information is communicated clearly and promptly.
- Work collaboratively with other leaders to support the unit.
Onsite unit management
- Oversee daily camping operations, including camp organisation and the unit kitchen.
- Coordinate ration collection and distribution.
- Support Duty Patrols and share responsibilities with AJSLs.
- Ensure the unit operates safely, efficiently and in the spirit of Scouting.
Travel and event logistics
- Travel to and from the Jamboree with your unit in accordance with NSW Contingent requirements.
- Support members through arrival, bump-in, the Jamboree program and departure.
Who can apply?
JSLs need to meet the Line Leader eligibility requirements set by AJ2028. Check them on our Cost & Eligibility page before you apply.
One Team, One Approach
Being a JSL is both a privilege and a significant responsibility. As a representative of the NSW Contingent, you are expected to lead by example through your actions, decisions and behaviour.
All JSLs are expected to:
- Model the Scout Promise, Scout Law and the values of Scouting.
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability and collaboration.
- Support young people, fellow leaders and families.
- Contribute positively to the success of the entire NSW Contingent.
- Always put young people first.
A new approach for AJ2028
For AJ2028, the NSW Contingent will adopt a more coordinated and centralised approach to administration, finances and pre-Jamboree preparation.
These changes are designed to:
- Reduce administrative workload for JSLs.
- Provide a more consistent experience for members and families.
- Allow leaders to focus on supporting their unit and delivering an exceptional Jamboree experience.
What is changing?
Unit fees included in the NSW Contingent fee
The NSW Contingent fee will include all approved unit fees, meaning members should not be charged additional unit fees.
Any additional charges require prior approval from the NSW Contingent Leader. This approach improves transparency, consistency and understanding of Jamboree costs.
Centralised administration and support
The NSW Contingent will manage a range of administrative functions traditionally handled at unit level.
This will streamline processes, reduce duplication and ensure consistency across the Contingent. JSLs will be supported by centralised systems and processes and will be expected to follow agreed procedures and requirements.
Centralised pre-Jamboree camps
The NSW Contingent will organise pre-Jamboree camps for all units.
You choose the weekend that suits your unit and we’ll organise the rest. Venue, food, activities and associated costs will be coordinated by the Contingent and included in the Jamboree fee.
This will reduce planning requirements for JSLs while providing a consistent preparation experience for youth members and adult leaders.
Centralised financial management with flexibility for unit purchases
All unit funds will be managed by the NSW Contingent and units will not independently collect or manage funds outside approved arrangements.
Units will still be able to personalise their Jamboree experience through approved purchases such as unit shirts, banners and similar items, provided they align with Contingent budgets and purchasing processes.
This approach balances financial oversight and accountability with flexibility for unit identity.
Our shared commitment
These changes are intended to build a stronger, more consistent and better-supported NSW Contingent. They are not designed to reduce the role of JSLs, but to provide leaders with greater support and clarity.
We are looking for leaders who will embrace this approach, work constructively with the Contingent team, lead by example and put the interests of young people and the wider Contingent first.
